National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit

13 December 2017
New NOGCA website
We now have a dedicated NOGCA website.

Everything you need for the Audit is on this website. This will include the Annual Report 2017 and downloadable Trust Summaries based on the results.

The Annual Report is due to be published on 14 December.

User survey results
We have published a User Survey Report based on the results of our summer survey.

The report includes graphs of the results to the multiple choice questions and thematic analysis of the free text responses.
There were many suggested improvements which will help us to improve the dataset and data collection system.

Submissions across trusts
The User Survey highlighted the difficulties trusts can encounter submitting data when more than one trust is responsible for the care of a patient. Debbie Heyes from Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust shared her experience:

"Multiple uploads by the different trusts involved in the care pathway were creating inaccuracies when data was overwritten, for example later staging investigations overwriting the original CTs. This meant extra work checking and re-uploading our data.

To resolve this, we met with the other trusts and agreed an approach: the diagnosing trusts send their patient and tumour records by nhs.net to the treating trusts, who then submit the complete care pathway to the Clinical Audit Platform (CAP). The treating trusts then send data from CAP back to the diagnosing trust for assurance. This system has worked really well for us since we started it three years ago."

If your organisation has a story it would like to share about it overcame similar difficulties, or any other useful best practice, please get in touch.

You can contact the audit team if you need to be put in touch with colleagues at another trust.

Clinical Outcomes Publication live on AUGIS
The COP data is now live on the AUGIS website.

The standard COP indicators are on the AUGIS site. The new process indicators, regarding margins and lymph nodes, will be available on the new NOGCA website after publication of the annual report.

The results will be published on NHS Choices in January.
